Hangovers: Why You Feel Awful and What Hydration Can — and Can’t — Do

Waking up after a night of drinking with thirst, a pounding head, nausea, fatigue, and a general sense of dread — that combination is a hangover, and it’s more complicated than simple dehydration.

What causes a hangover

Alcohol suppresses vasopressin, a hormone that normally helps your kidneys hold onto fluid, so you lose more water than you took in. But that’s only one piece: alcohol also disrupts sleep, irritates the stomach, drives inflammation, and produces acetaldehyde as it’s broken down. Replacing fluid can ease the thirst and dehydration piece while leaving the rest of the symptoms untouched.

What hydration can and can’t do

There’s no instant detox and no proven cure. An IV doesn’t pull alcohol or its byproducts out of your bloodstream, doesn’t make it safe to drive, and doesn’t reverse alcohol poisoning or speed up how your brain recovers. Time is the only thing that actually processes alcohol out of your system.

When it’s an emergency

If someone is awake, stable, and able to drink, water, food as tolerated, and rest are reasonable next steps. Call 911 for difficulty waking up, confusion, seizures, slow or irregular breathing, blue or pale skin, repeated vomiting, loss of consciousness, or suspected alcohol poisoning — and never leave an unconscious person alone.

At Arizona IV

For a clinically appropriate client mainly dealing with dehydration after drinking, the Myers’ Cocktail may be discussed after screening. If nausea is the primary concern, contact our clinical team directly to discuss whether hydration support is appropriate. No infusion should be presented as curing a hangover, removing alcohol from the body, or treating the underlying cause of nausea.
