Colds, Flu and Hydration During Recovery

Colds and flu are both viral respiratory illnesses, though flu tends to hit harder and faster — more intense fever, body aches, and fatigue. During either one, fever, faster breathing, reduced appetite, vomiting, or simply forgetting to drink can all add up to dehydration.

Cold vs. flu

Colds and flu are both viral respiratory illnesses, though flu tends to hit harder and faster, with more intense fever, body aches, and fatigue. Antiviral medication for flu may be appropriate for some patients, particularly when started early or when someone is at higher risk for complications — that call belongs with a qualified medical professional, not a wellness visit. Antibiotics don’t do anything for viral colds or flu.

What helps recovery

Fluids support normal body function and help replace what’s been lost — but they don’t kill a virus. A vitamin infusion shouldn’t be described as curing a cold, shortening the flu, “boosting” immunity on demand, or preventing complications. For most people with mild illness who can still drink, rest and oral fluids remain the right starting point.

When to seek care

Difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, severe weakness, dehydration, bluish lips or face, or symptoms that seem to improve and then come back worse all warrant medical care. A contagious patient should call ahead before visiting any clinic so appropriate precautions can be taken.

At Arizona IV

For someone whose illness has led to genuinely inadequate fluid intake, but who doesn’t need urgent or hospital-level care, the Myers’ Cocktail may be worth discussing after screening. The Myers’ formula is positioned as hydration with vitamins and minerals — not a treatment for the virus itself. If you’re currently contagious, please call ahead so our team can advise you appropriately.
